If you are looking to shake up your everyday yoga routine and stir things up to challenge your body and mind, then you should consider SUP Yoga classes. The latest addition at Ashiyana Yoga, SUP Yoga or Stand Up Paddle Yoga, as the name suggests, combines the playfulness of a water sport called stand up paddling with the holistic goodness of yoga. The result? The elements of nature and your own body come together to create magic on the beaches of Goa! Want to know more about this amazing yoga trend that is catching on across the world? Then, read on to find answers to all your questions!

What is SUP Yoga?

Stand up paddle surfing and stand up paddle boarding (SUP) are sports that originated in Hawaii as offshoots of surfing. This sport enables surfers to paddle standing up as a sport unto itself. SUP Yoga uses this watersport to add an extra element of challenge and excitement to the yoga routine. Participants paddle into the water, stand on their boards and practice their asanas. In the process, they learn to breathe, move in tandem with the flow of the water, build stability and enjoy the fun factor of the whole session!

Why SUP Yoga?

In yoga we play with, stimulate and channel prana (life force and vital energy) into our bodies through our breath (pranayama), postures, sound, and so on. Water holds abundant amounts of this pure life force energy, and thus helps us to relax and re-energise. Combining Stand up Paddle and yoga allows you to joyfully and playfully open to the force of nature within you. You merge with your environment as you connect to the water, your breath and your body. Since you will be afloat while standing, balance is quite a challenge too, making it extra important for you to engage your core for better balance, making it a better workout. Also, you will focus more on refining each of the poses because if you don't balance your body right, the board can shift to one side. You will love the sensation of floating that helps you calm down and slip into a relaxing rhythm, forgetting all your burdens and your bodily weight. But the best part is practicing yoga in the vast open sea as you soak up the sun and become one with nature, as the sound of the waves lifts your spirits and soothes your senses.

Why is SUP Yoga so much fun?

Mixing things up always breaks the monotony of routine. And that's one reason SUP Yoga is so much fun! There's no way you can get bored when you are out in the sea, balancing yourself on a paddleboard and practicing your asanas. The paddleboard will keep you on your toes as there's less room for error and the fun is in trying to stay afloat and not fall off the board into the water. Even if you do fall, who's complaining? You will get right back on your board and try again till you master it!
